Product Knowledge

About the Amphora Style Gourmet Jars

Background, typical uses, construction, filling guidance and production notes for buyers selecting this container for bulk supply or private-label programs.

Overview & background

The amphora was the shipping and storage vessel of the ancient Mediterranean, used for oil, wine and preserved foods. A jar that echoes its tapered, shouldered profile inherits all of that association — craft, provenance, the Mediterranean larder — which is exactly what gourmet brands want to evoke.

It is a 'shape-led' jar: buyers choose it because the silhouette tells a premium story before the label is even read.

Applications & industries

Antipasti, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto and sauces, olives and capers, chutneys and preserves, confit and rillettes. It is heavily used in deli, specialty retail and hamper gifting, where the jar earns its higher cost through presentation.

Many of these fills are oil-covered or acidic, both of which glass handles well, supporting a long, attractive shelf life.

Design & construction

A tapered body with a defined shoulder narrows to a lug-finish neck for a twist-off cap. Embossed motifs are common to enhance the artisanal feel, and some ranges finish the neck with a wax dip for an extra craft cue.

The taper and shoulder need careful glass distribution so the wall stays even from belly to neck.

Handling & best practice

Oil-packed and acidic gourmet products are usually hot-filled or pasteurized; observe headspace so the lug cap pulls a clean vacuum, and ensure any embossing does not interfere with label placement. For oil-covered products, top-up and seal so no product is left exposed in the headspace.

Wax-dipped necks are decorative and should be applied after capping; warn that wax is not the seal.

Manufacturing & quality

Press-and-blow forming creates the wide-mouth tapered body; the blow mold carries the shoulder profile and any embossing. Even wall thickness around the taper is the forming target.

After annealing, the lug finish is gauged for cap fit and the sealing surface inspected, since most fills rely on a vacuum seal.

Build Options

Configure the Container, Closure and Packing Together

A packaging program is more than the glass. Closure, liner, fill process, label area and export carton should be confirmed together before the first sample or bulk order.

Capacity & Shape

Confirm brimful capacity, practical fill level, body proportions and label panel so the chosen size suits the product and the line.

Closure System

Match lug, CT, cork, pump or dispensing closures with the right liner for the fill temperature, viscosity and sealing method.

Glass & Finish

Clear or amber glass, sprayed color, frosting, embossing and decoration are checked against shelf presentation and light protection.

Export Packing

Carton partitions, pallet pattern, loading plan and shipping marks are planned for long-distance transport and warehouse handling.
