Product Knowledge

About the Bell-Shaped Preserve Jars

Background, typical uses, construction, filling guidance and production notes for buyers selecting this container for bulk supply or private-label programs.

Overview & background

The bell or tulip jar is a long-standing European preserving shape, its flared profile both attractive and practical: the body widens toward the mouth so set preserves release and can be spooned without the product hanging up on an in-turned shoulder.

It reads as traditional and homemade, which is why farm shops and artisan preservers favour it over a plain straight-sided jar.

Applications & industries

Jams and marmalades, fruit in syrup, compotes and coulis, bottled vegetables, pickles, relishes and chutneys. It suits both small-batch artisan producers and gift and seasonal ranges, and its wide mouth is friendly to chunky, set and whole-fruit products.

The shape is frequently dressed with a fabric lid cover for the homemade-preserve look.

Design & construction

The flaring bell body rises to a wide lug or CT mouth. The taper helps clean release of set product and lets empty jars nest slightly for shipping. Clear glass shows off bright fruit color; embossing can add a decorative, traditional touch.

Wall distribution is managed so the flare does not thin the upper body where the diameter grows toward the mouth.

Handling & best practice

High-sugar, high-acid preserves are typically hot-filled or water-bath processed; leave the right headspace so the lug cap forms its vacuum, and avoid thermal shock by not filling a cold jar with boiling product in one pour.

The wide mouth makes a clean rim essential for the seal; wipe any sticky preserve from the rim before capping.

Manufacturing & quality

Press-and-blow forming creates the wide-mouth bell body, with the flare and any embossing carried in the blow mold. Even wall thickness through the flare is the forming priority.

After annealing, the finish is gauged for cap fit and the sealing surface inspected, as the preserve relies on a vacuum seal.

Build Options

Configure the Container, Closure and Packing Together

A packaging program is more than the glass. Closure, liner, fill process, label area and export carton should be confirmed together before the first sample or bulk order.

Capacity & Shape

Confirm brimful capacity, practical fill level, body proportions and label panel so the chosen size suits the product and the line.

Closure System

Match lug, CT, cork, pump or dispensing closures with the right liner for the fill temperature, viscosity and sealing method.

Glass & Finish

Clear or amber glass, sprayed color, frosting, embossing and decoration are checked against shelf presentation and light protection.

Export Packing

Carton partitions, pallet pattern, loading plan and shipping marks are planned for long-distance transport and warehouse handling.

Stock or Custom Build

Review available molds first, then evaluate color, decoration or a mold change if the project needs a differentiated retail look.

Sample Confirmation

Confirm capacity, closure fit, liner selection, label area and carton protection with samples before bulk production.

Export Preparation

Cartons, dividers, pallet loading and shipping marks are planned for distributors, warehouses and multi-country shipments.
