Bell-Shaped Preserve Jars

The bell jar takes its name from its silhouette: a broad, gently flared base that curves in toward the shoulder and finishes in a wide threaded mouth. The shape reads as traditional and homemade, which is why farm shops and artisan preservers choose it over a plain straight-sided jar.

The low center of gravity also makes it a stable, confident jar on the shelf and the breakfast table.

Jams and marmalades, fruit in syrup, compotes and coulis, pickled vegetables, relishes and chutneys. It suits small-batch producers as well as gift and seasonal ranges, and the wide mouth handles chunky, set and whole-fruit products.

The shape is often dressed with a fabric lid cover and twine for a homemade look, and it works well in mixed gift boxes alongside honey and preserves.

The flared lower body gives a wide, stable footprint and a generous label area where the curve is gentlest. The neck carries a wide lug or CT finish for a twist-off cap, and clear glass shows off bright fruit color. Embossing can add a decorative, traditional touch.

The changing diameter means wall distribution has to be managed through the curve so the glass stays even from base to shoulder.

High-sugar, high-acid preserves are typically hot-filled or water-bath processed. Leave consistent headspace so the lug cap forms its vacuum, and avoid thermal shock by not filling a cold jar with boiling product in one pour.

A clean rim is essential for the seal, so wipe off any sticky preserve before capping. On the curved body, a shorter or tapered label applies more cleanly than a tall straight one.

Press-and-blow forming creates the bell body, with the curve and any embossing carried in the blow mold. After annealing, the finish is gauged for cap fit and the sealing surface inspected, since preserves rely on a vacuum seal.
