Burgundy Bottles

The Burgundy bottle has gently sloping shoulders and a wider body than the Bordeaux, the traditional home of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its softer silhouette reads as more artisanal and is used across both classic Burgundian varieties and a wide range of premium New World wines.

Product Knowledge

About the Burgundy Bottles

Background, typical uses, construction, filling guidance and production notes for buyers selecting this container for bulk supply or private-label programs.

Overview & background

Where the Bordeaux bottle is angular, the Burgundy is curved: sloping shoulders flow into a wider body with no sharp break. The shape is older and is associated with the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of Burgundy, but it is now a worldwide signal of a softer, more traditional style of wine.

Its broader body makes it feel more substantial in the hand, which is one reason premium producers of Pinot, Chardonnay and Rhône varieties favour it even outside Burgundy.

Applications & industries

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Rhône-style reds, and many premium whites are bottled in Burgundy glass. It is also a common base bottle for some sparkling wines. The wider footprint means it occupies more space in the case and on the shelf than a Bordeaux of the same volume.

Design & construction

The bottle uses a cork mouth to the CETIE standard, with screw-cap (BVS) versions available. Glass weight again ranges from lightweight eco bottles to heavy prestige formats; the sloping shoulder distributes glass slightly differently from the Bordeaux, and tooling is set to keep the shoulder wall sound. A punt is standard.

Handling & best practice

As with all still wine, fill cold and control fill height for cork seating and label registration. The wider body is marginally more sensitive to impact on the shoulder, so line guides are set accordingly. Use dark glass for light-sensitive wines that will sit under retail lighting.

Manufacturing & quality

Formed by blow-and-blow or NNPB, annealed and surface-coated like other wine bottles. The sloped shoulder is defined in the blow mold, and the finish is gauged for cork or screw-cap compatibility before packing.

Build Options

Configure the Container, Closure and Packing Together

A packaging program is more than the glass. Closure, liner, fill process, label area and export carton should be confirmed together before the first sample or bulk order.

Capacity & Shape

Confirm brimful capacity, practical fill level, body proportions and label panel so the chosen size suits the product and the line.

Closure System

Match lug, CT, cork, pump or dispensing closures with the right liner for the fill temperature, viscosity and sealing method.

Glass & Finish

Clear or amber glass, sprayed color, frosting, embossing and decoration are checked against shelf presentation and light protection.

Export Packing

Carton partitions, pallet pattern, loading plan and shipping marks are planned for long-distance transport and warehouse handling.
