Overview & background
Where the Bordeaux bottle is angular, the Burgundy is curved: sloping shoulders flow into a wider body with no sharp break. The shape is older and is associated with the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of Burgundy, but it is now a worldwide signal of a softer, more traditional style of wine.
Its broader body makes it feel more substantial in the hand, which is one reason premium producers of Pinot, Chardonnay and Rhône varieties favour it even outside Burgundy.
