Overview & background

The wide-mouth cosmetic jar is the classic package for creams and balms that are scooped rather than poured. Glass is chosen at the premium end because it is inert (it will not interact with rich oil-and-water emulsions or absorb fragrance), fully recyclable, and conveys quality through its clarity and weight.

An inner sealing disc sits on the product under the screw cap, reducing air contact and helping keep the cream fresh, while the broad opening makes the last of the product easy to reach.

Applications & industries

Face, eye and body creams, body butters and balms, face and hair masks, lip balms and salves, pomades and solid perfumes. The jar spans mass-premium to luxury skincare, spa and clinic ranges.

Design & construction

A wide CT mouth (commonly 38–70 mm) takes a screw cap and an inner disc or liner that seals the product. Caps range from plain to metallized and weighted for luxury lines. Double-wall jars (a glass inner in an outer shell) are used where extra premium feel or a smaller fill in a larger silhouette is wanted. Frosting, spraying and hot stamping are common finishes.

Handling & best practice

Creams are filled cold or warm; the inner disc is seated on the surface before capping to limit air contact. Confirm liner and cap material compatibility with the emulsion and any actives. Jars are inert and protect the formula well, but the wide opening exposes more product to air in use, so the inner seal and a good cap matter for shelf life.

Manufacturing & quality

Wide-mouth jars are press-and-blow formed for an even wall and clean sealing rim. Opal-white glass is opacified in the batch; frosting and spraying are applied after forming. The sealing rim is inspected because the inner disc and cap seal onto it.
