Overview & background
The growler is the refillable jug breweries use to sell draft beer for off-premise drinking. The molded glass handle makes a heavy, full jug easy to carry, and the amber glass protects hoppy beer from lightstrike on the trip home. The 64 oz (about 1.9 L) size is the North American standard, with 1 L and 2 L common elsewhere.
Because it is refilled at the taproom, the growler is a returnable, branded vessel — part packaging, part merchandise that carries the brewery's identity.
