Overview & background
The hurricane gets its name from its purpose: a tall glass surround that shields a candle flame from drafts so it stays lit, even in a breeze. The open-top cylinder or lantern lets a pillar candle burn steadily on a windy patio or a busy table, glowing through the glass while the flame is protected.
It is a holder and a shelter rather than a wax vessel, valued for keeping candlelight reliable and elegant indoors and out.
