Large-Volume Parenteral Infusion Bottles

Large-volume parenterals are the intravenous fluids given by infusion: saline, dextrose, nutrition and irrigation solutions. Much IV fluid now ships in plastic bags, but glass infusion bottles remain essential for drugs and formulations that adsorb onto plastic, extract plasticizers or react with polymer surfaces.

Made from Type I or Type II glass and sealed with an infusion stopper, these bottles are built to withstand terminal autoclave sterilization and give a clear container in which the fluid can be checked for particles before use.

The bottles carry IV saline and dextrose, parenteral nutrition, irrigation solutions, IV drug diluents and plasma volume expanders for hospitals, infusion centers and veterinary practice. They are the container of choice for drugs that are incompatible with plastic IV bags. The 50–100 ml sizes serve drug diluents and small-volume infusions; 250–1000 ml covers standard hydration, nutrition and irrigation fluids. Amber versions protect light-sensitive admixtures and nutrition products.

The bottle has a strong cylindrical body, rounded shoulders, a heavy base and a 32 mm infusion finish for a rubber stopper and aluminum crimp seal. A hanger band or wire hanger lets the bottle hang inverted on an IV pole. Type I borosilicate is specified for sensitive drugs; Type II, soda-lime glass with a treated inner surface, suits many standard solutions. Clear glass is standard, with amber available for light-sensitive products.

Most large-volume parenterals are terminally sterilized in an autoclave, so the drug manufacturer qualifies the bottle, stopper and seal together to survive the cycle and maintain integrity. Container-closure integrity, particulate control and clarity are the critical attributes for a product infused in volume. We mold the bottles by blow-and-blow from pharmaceutical glass, then anneal them carefully so they withstand repeated thermal cycling. Each lot is inspected for glass type, dimensions, defects and clarity, and certificates of analysis and compliance documentation are available on request.
