Marasca Olive Oil Bottles

The Marasca is the upright, square-shouldered bottle that says 'Italian olive oil'. Originally a cherry-liqueur bottle from Zadar, its tall square body and narrow pour neck became the standard for extra-virgin oil, vinegars and infused oils sold in 250–750 ml retail formats.

Product Knowledge

About the Marasca Olive Oil Bottles

Background, typical uses, construction, filling guidance and production notes for buyers selecting this container for bulk supply or private-label programs.

Overview & background

The Marasca shape descends from the bottles used for Maraschino, the cherry liqueur from the Dalmatian coast. Its square body, defined shoulder and slim neck travelled into the olive-oil world and became one of the most recognisable oil bottles on the shelf, especially in the 250 ml and 500 ml sizes.

Its proportions are functional as much as traditional: the square body labels well and packs efficiently, while the narrow neck controls the pour and pairs with a pourer insert or cork.

Applications & industries

Marasca bottles are the default for extra-virgin olive oil and have spread to specialty seed oils, wine and balsamic vinegars, verjus and infused oils. Foodservice and gourmet retail both use them, and the larger 750 ml–1 L sizes serve refill and HoReCa channels.

Because oil quality is a selling point, the bottle is often specified in dark green or UV-absorbing glass to slow light-driven rancidity, with the color itself becoming part of the premium cue.

Design & construction

Two neck systems dominate: a cork/bartop mouth for an artisanal feel, and a 31.5 mm guala finish that accepts a non-refillable, drip-free pourer popular in restaurants and for anti-fraud reasons. The square body usually carries a defined heel and a flat label panel front and back.

Dark 'antique green' or UVAG glass is chosen for protection rather than looks; if a clear bottle is required for a bright golden oil, an outer carton or sleeve is the usual compromise to limit light exposure.

Handling & best practice

Oil is filled cold, so thermal shock is rarely a concern, but fill level and headspace matter for the pourer fitment and for label alignment. With guala pourers, the insert is pushed into the neck after filling and should seat fully so it cannot be levered out.

Olive oil is light- and oxygen-sensitive: minimise headspace, use a good liner, and advise customers to store upright and away from light. Cork closures breathe slightly and are better for shorter shelf lives than long-stored stock.

Manufacturing & quality

As a narrow-neck bottle, the Marasca is formed by the blow-and-blow process (or NNPB for lighter weights): a settle blow and counter blow form the parison and finish first, then the final blow forms the body. This gives a strong, well-formed neck for the cork or pourer.

Colored glass is produced by adding metal oxides to the batch — chromium and iron compounds for the characteristic greens. After annealing, neck and finish dimensions are gauged closely because pourer and cork fit depend on them.

Build Options

Configure the Container, Closure and Packing Together

A packaging program is more than the glass. Closure, liner, fill process, label area and export carton should be confirmed together before the first sample or bulk order.

Capacity & Shape

Confirm brimful capacity, practical fill level, body proportions and label panel so the chosen size suits the product and the line.

Closure System

Match lug, CT, cork, pump or dispensing closures with the right liner for the fill temperature, viscosity and sealing method.

Glass & Finish

Clear or amber glass, sprayed color, frosting, embossing and decoration are checked against shelf presentation and light protection.

Export Packing

Carton partitions, pallet pattern, loading plan and shipping marks are planned for long-distance transport and warehouse handling.

Stock or Custom Build

Review available molds first, then evaluate color, decoration or a mold change if the project needs a differentiated retail look.

Sample Confirmation

Confirm capacity, closure fit, liner selection, label area and carton protection with samples before bulk production.

Export Preparation

Cartons, dividers, pallet loading and shipping marks are planned for distributors, warehouses and multi-country shipments.
