Overview & background
The flute bottle is immediately recognisable for what it lacks: a shoulder. The body tapers in one long line from base to neck, giving a tall, slim silhouette historically tied to the wines of the Rhine, Mosel and Alsace. Traditionally brown glass marked Rhine (Rheingau) wines and green marked Mosel and Alsace, a color code still loosely observed.
Because the shape is so strongly associated with aromatic whites, using it is itself a signal to the consumer about the style of wine inside.
