The flute bottle, also called the hock or Alsace bottle, is recognizable for what it lacks: a shoulder. The body tapers in one long line from base to neck, giving the tall, slim silhouette historically tied to the wines of the Rhine, Mosel and Alsace.
Traditionally, brown glass marked Rhine wines and green marked Mosel and Alsace, a color code still loosely observed. The shape itself tells the shopper to expect an aromatic white.
The flute is standard for Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and other aromatic whites across Germany and Alsace, and is widely used by New World producers of the same varieties. Half bottles of 375 ml are popular for late-harvest and dessert versions. Private-label buyers use the shape to place a wine in the aromatic-white section at a glance, without relying on the label alone.
A cork mouth to the CETIE bore is usual, with BVS screw-cap versions common for fresh, reductive styles. Because there is no shoulder, glass distribution runs the full length of the body, and the base is only shallowly punted or flat. The slim profile makes the bottle taller than a Bordeaux of equal volume, which affects case height, shelf clearance and labeler setup.
Fill cool and control fill height as for any still wine. Screw caps suit aromatic whites where freshness and a clean style are the goal. These wines are light-sensitive, so green or amber glass and shaded storage help protect aromatics and prevent lightstrike. The tall, narrow bottle needs guides and starwheels set for its height and diameter.

Flute bottles are formed by blow-and-blow or NNPB, with the long taper defined in the blow mold; even wall thickness over the full height is the main forming target. Bottles are annealed, surface-coated and gauged for cork or screw closures.
