Rhine / Alsace Flute Bottles

Tall, slender and shoulderless, the flute bottle (also called the hock or Alsace bottle) is the traditional home of aromatic whites — Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris. Its elongated taper distinguishes these wines on the shelf at a glance, classically brown for German Rhine wines and green for Mosel and Alsace.

Product Knowledge

About the Rhine / Alsace Flute Bottles

Background, typical uses, construction, filling guidance and production notes for buyers selecting this container for bulk supply or private-label programs.

Overview & background

The flute bottle is immediately recognisable for what it lacks: a shoulder. The body tapers in one long line from base to neck, giving a tall, slim silhouette historically tied to the wines of the Rhine, Mosel and Alsace. Traditionally brown glass marked Rhine (Rheingau) wines and green marked Mosel and Alsace, a color code still loosely observed.

Because the shape is so strongly associated with aromatic whites, using it is itself a signal to the consumer about the style of wine inside.

Applications & industries

Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and other aromatic whites, including late-harvest and dessert versions in 375 ml half bottles. It is standard across German and Alsace wine and widely used by New World producers of these varieties.

Design & construction

A cork mouth to the CETIE standard is usual, with BVS screw-cap versions common for fresh aromatic whites. The shoulderless taper means glass distribution runs the full length of the body, and the base is typically only shallowly punted or flat. The slim profile makes the bottle taller than a Bordeaux of equal volume, which affects case and shelf height.

Handling & best practice

Fill cold and control fill height as for any wine. Screwcaps suit aromatic whites where freshness and a clean reductive style are wanted. These delicate wines are light-sensitive, so brown or green glass and shaded storage help preserve aromatics and prevent lightstrike.

Manufacturing & quality

Formed by blow-and-blow or NNPB, with the long tapered body defined in the blow mold; even wall thickness over the height is the main forming target. Annealed and surface-coated, then finish-gauged for cork or screw closure.

Build Options

Configure the Container, Closure and Packing Together

A packaging program is more than the glass. Closure, liner, fill process, label area and export carton should be confirmed together before the first sample or bulk order.

Capacity & Shape

Confirm brimful capacity, practical fill level, body proportions and label panel so the chosen size suits the product and the line.

Closure System

Match lug, CT, cork, pump or dispensing closures with the right liner for the fill temperature, viscosity and sealing method.

Glass & Finish

Clear or amber glass, sprayed color, frosting, embossing and decoration are checked against shelf presentation and light protection.

Export Packing

Carton partitions, pallet pattern, loading plan and shipping marks are planned for long-distance transport and warehouse handling.
