Product Knowledge

About the Sealed Glass Ampoules

Background, typical uses, construction, filling guidance and production notes for buyers selecting this container for bulk supply or private-label programs.

Overview & background

An ampoule is a small glass container that is sealed by melting its neck closed, so the contents are hermetically protected with no cap, liner or thread to leak or let air in. Borrowed from pharmaceutical practice, it has become a premium skincare format for unstable, high-potency actives that must stay pristine until use.

Because each ampoule is a single dose opened fresh, there is no in-use oxidation or contamination — which is the whole selling point for ingredients like vitamin C, retinol and freeze-dried actives that degrade once exposed to air.

Applications & industries

Concentrated serums, freeze-dried and fresh actives, vitamin C and retinol shots, intensive treatment courses, post-procedure skincare, hair and scalp ampoules, spa and clinic protocols, and single-dose samples. Often sold as a timed course of daily ampoules.

Design & construction

A small glass body drawn to a narrow neck that is flame-sealed after filling. A one-point-cut (OPC) score or a color-break ring lets the user snap the tip cleanly by hand without a file. Color-code rings on the neck identify variants. Type I borosilicate is used for the most sensitive or reactive formulas.

Handling & best practice

Ampoules are filled and then flame-sealed, often under inert gas for oxygen-sensitive actives; sealing quality is critical, as a poor seal defeats the format. Users snap the scored neck to open, so packaging should warn about the glass tip and, ideally, include an opening aid. Because they are single-use, there is no resealing — the dose is meant to be used at once.

Manufacturing & quality

Ampoules are usually formed from glass tubing on converting machines that shape the body and neck, then scored or ringed for opening. After filling, the neck is flame-sealed (tip-seal or pull-seal). Seal integrity and the snap-open feature are checked, and borosilicate grades are used where chemical resistance is required.

Build Options

Configure the Container, Closure and Packing Together

A packaging program is more than the glass. Closure, liner, fill process, label area and export carton should be confirmed together before the first sample or bulk order.

Capacity & Shape

Confirm brimful capacity, practical fill level, body proportions and label panel so the chosen size suits the product and the line.

Closure System

Match lug, CT, cork, pump or dispensing closures with the right liner for the fill temperature, viscosity and sealing method.

Glass & Finish

Clear or amber glass, sprayed color, frosting, embossing and decoration are checked against shelf presentation and light protection.

Export Packing

Carton partitions, pallet pattern, loading plan and shipping marks are planned for long-distance transport and warehouse handling.

Stock or Custom Build

Review available molds first, then evaluate color, decoration or a mold change if the project needs a differentiated retail look.

Sample Confirmation

Confirm capacity, closure fit, liner selection, label area and carton protection with samples before bulk production.

Export Preparation

Cartons, dividers, pallet loading and shipping marks are planned for distributors, warehouses and multi-country shipments.
