Swing-Top Wire Bail Metal Assemblies

The swing-top closure, made famous on Grolsch beer, is a small mechanical assembly: a stainless wire bail hinges on lugs at the bottle neck and, when flipped down, levers a gasketed ceramic or plastic stopper firmly onto the bottle mouth. The result is a reusable, tool-free seal strong enough to hold carbonation, opened and closed by hand again and again.

Because the seal depends on the gasket rather than on a vacuum or a crimp, the gasket is a replaceable consumable — swap it when it wears and the bottle is good as new, which is part of the format's reusable, sustainable appeal.

A stainless-steel wire bail, a ceramic or plastic stopper (often brandable on ceramic), and a replaceable rubber or food-grade silicone gasket, fitted to bottle necks with matching swing-top lugs. The bail geometry sets the clamping force; the gasket forms the seal. Bright or coated wire and colored stoppers give finish options.

Seal quality depends on the bottle's rim being flat and the gasket being in good condition and seated clean and flat; worn gaskets are replaced. For carbonated and fermenting drinks the closure holds pressure, but the bottle and closure together must be rated for the pressure expected. The bail should close with a firm, positive snap — too loose leaks, too tight stresses the parts.

The wire bail is formed and (where required) coated stainless steel; the stopper is molded plastic or made/branded ceramic; the gasket is molded rubber or silicone. The parts are assembled to the bottle or supplied as kits. Bail clamping force, gasket fit and seal performance are the key quality checks.
