Tokkuri Gourd Sake Bottles

A tokkuri is the traditional Japanese sake serving flask: a rounded body that narrows to a slim neck, often with a gourd-like waist, used to warm and pour sake at the table. In glass it pairs heritage form with the clarity to show the sake, for restaurant service, gifting and premium retail.

Product Knowledge

About the Tokkuri Gourd Sake Bottles

Background, typical uses, construction, filling guidance and production notes for buyers selecting this container for bulk supply or private-label programs.

Overview & background

The tokkuri is the flask sake is served from — a rounded body tapering to a narrow neck that controls the pour into small ochoko cups. The narrow neck also helps when warming sake (kanzake), since the flask is stood in hot water and the slim opening limits aroma loss. A gourd-like waisted form is a common traditional variation.

Rendered in glass rather than the usual ceramic, the tokkuri keeps its ceremonial form while letting the clarity and color of a premium sake show through.

Applications & industries

Table service of warm and cold sake, premium retail sake sold in a serving-ready flask, izakaya and restaurant use, shochu, and gift sets paired with matching cups. It crosses between packaging and tableware, and is popular as a gift and souvenir.

Design & construction

A rounded, sometimes waisted body narrows to a slim pouring neck. Retail versions are sealed with a cork or ROPP closure; pure serving flasks are left open for table use. A heat-tolerant glass grade is specified where the flask will be warmed in hot water. Frosting and screen print suit the premium positioning.

Handling & best practice

For warming, the flask is placed in hot (not boiling) water and brought up gently; avoid pouring boiling water onto cold glass or subjecting it to sudden temperature swings, as soda-lime glass is sensitive to thermal shock. Sake is light- and heat-sensitive, so cool, shaded storage protects flavor. Retail-sealed versions need a sound neck finish for the closure.

Manufacturing & quality

Formed by blow-and-blow; the rounded or gourd body and narrow neck are defined in the blow mold. Annealing is important for any flask that will be heated and cooled in service, and the neck is finished for a cork or ROPP where a sealed version is required.

Build Options

Configure the Container, Closure and Packing Together

A packaging program is more than the glass. Closure, liner, fill process, label area and export carton should be confirmed together before the first sample or bulk order.

Capacity & Shape

Confirm brimful capacity, practical fill level, body proportions and label panel so the chosen size suits the product and the line.

Closure System

Match lug, CT, cork, pump or dispensing closures with the right liner for the fill temperature, viscosity and sealing method.

Glass & Finish

Clear or amber glass, sprayed color, frosting, embossing and decoration are checked against shelf presentation and light protection.

Export Packing

Carton partitions, pallet pattern, loading plan and shipping marks are planned for long-distance transport and warehouse handling.
