A volumetric flask is the standard vessel for making up a solution to an exact volume. A single fine ring on the narrow neck marks the calibrated volume, so filling to that line gives a highly repeatable result, the basis of preparing standards and accurate dilutions.
The long, narrow neck is deliberate: a small change in liquid height there is a tiny change in volume, so the fill point can be hit precisely. We supply the flasks in Class A and Class B.
Volumetric flasks are used to prepare standards and solutions to an exact concentration, make accurate dilutions, run quantitative analysis and prepare calibration standards for instruments. They are core glassware in analytical, QC, pharmaceutical, food-testing and environmental labs, and in analytical chemistry teaching. Amber flasks hold light-sensitive standards during preparation and short-term storage. Small 1 ml to 25 ml flasks suit trace and instrumental work, while 1 L and 2 L sizes cover bulk buffers and mobile phases.
Each flask has a pear-shaped borosilicate 3.3 body, a flat base and a long narrow neck bearing a single calibration ring, closed by a ground-glass or plastic stopper. Flasks are calibrated to contain (TC) the nominal volume at a stated reference temperature, commonly 20 °C. Class A flasks are made to tighter tolerances than Class B, and certificates for the model you order are available on request.
Fill until the bottom of the meniscus sits on the ring at eye level, ideally at the calibration temperature. Mix by inverting the flask several times with the stopper held in place. Don’t heat volumetric flasks or fill them with hot liquids, as this can shift the calibrated volume. Keep a ground-glass stopper with its own flask, and rinse promptly after alkaline solutions to protect the joint.
We form the flasks from borosilicate 3.3, grind the neck joint, anneal them and then calibrate each flask against reference standards before the ring mark is applied. Class A flasks can be supplied with batch or individual certificates. Options include amber glass, glass or plastic stoppers, wide-neck versions, individual serial numbers and custom printed marks.
