Wide-Mouth Storage Jars

The wide-mouth storage jar is the hard-working end of the food-jar range: a roomy, straight-sided body with a mouth almost as wide as the shoulder, so a hand or scoop can reach the bottom and the jar fills quickly on a line. It descends from the bulk jars used in grocery stores and commercial kitchens.

What it lacks in styling it makes up for in versatility. It is the format brands and shops choose when access, capacity and packing efficiency matter more than a distinctive silhouette.

Pantry staples such as flour, sugar, grains and pasta, pickles and gherkins, olives and antipasti, bulk preserves and bakery or catering ingredients. The 2 L and 3 L sizes serve foodservice and deli display; smaller sizes suit retail pantry ranges and refill stores.

Its honest, see-everything look has made it a staple of the zero-waste and bulk-refill movement, where shoppers fill their own jars and stores need a durable, uniform jar on the shelf.

Straight sides and a wide lug or CT mouth keep the jar easy to fill, empty and stack. The closure can be a simple lug lid for pasteurized wet products or an airtight clip or screw seal for dry goods that need to stay crisp.

Larger sizes carry a thicker base and heel to handle the weight of dense contents and the knocks of catering use.

For wet, pasteurized products such as pickles and olives, use a plastisol-lined lug lid with consistent headspace so a vacuum forms; for dry goods, a foam or silicone seal keeps moisture out. Large jars are heavy when full, so advise two-handed handling and sturdy shelving.

Avoid pouring boiling brine into a cold large jar in one go. Pre-warm the jars or fill in stages to limit thermal shock on the thick base.

Wide-mouth jars are press-and-blow formed, which suits the even, fairly heavy wall and clean wide rim they need. Annealing and base inspection get extra attention on the large sizes, where residual stress and stable seating both matter under load.
