Overview & background
Fortified-wine bottles share the dark, heavy character of red-wine glass but add features for their category. The classic port bottle has a pronounced bulb in the neck: as vintage port ages and throws a heavy crystalline deposit, the bulb helps trap that sediment when the wine is decanted, keeping the pour clear.
Because fortified wine is higher in alcohol and keeps for weeks after opening, many of these bottles use a bar-top (T-top) cork that can be pulled and re-inserted repeatedly, rather than a single-use driven cork.
